always expectFredrick Douglas Argument
Introduction- Douglass explains how their is a lack of independence with-in the black community in America. He also goes on to state his point of view of the 4th of July, which is different from most because he is a former slave.
Narration- Douglas often criticizes "Independence Day" because Fredrick Douglas says that it only applies to whites. He also claims that it does not include the African American slaves in the celebration. He focuses more on the enslaved people viewing "Independence Day" rather than those that were formally enslaved people, whom were which freed on July 4th. Division- People should have the right to celebrate July 4th because it is a very important day in the historical past of the United States of America. Although, Fredrick Douglas does not believe that this is not a day to call upon independence due to the fact that a ton of blacks were still enslaved at the time. Proof- On July 4th, colonists were freed from Great Britain's rule, but unfortunately, they were not the only ones that were in-control the African American people. Hundreds of years later after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, black people were still enslaved. Douglas stated that the special day known as "Independence Day" should not associate with the black community in modern day times. Refutation- Fredrick Douglas had an experience with slavery back in the day. He also stated deeper in his argument, that it was unruly and cruel for the innocent black people who were enslaved after trying to escape racism. Conclusion- Fredrick concludes his argument by restating his main thesis of claim, which was that the 4th of July should not be called "Independence Day" because we have yet to even reach a true day of independence due to the millions of people in the African-American community that were excluded. |
